There are cases where music benefit from almost no dynamic range at all, some songs by Emptyset being an excellent example. But most music don’t, especially if you make commercial pop or dance music you have to watch out. Comments like the title on this post are very common and they are all based on an misconception about loudness. Recently I mastered a song that where going on radio and I had to fight to make the customer understand why I wouldn’t make it as loud as the track he sent as an reference. Today I found this article which explain what your audio is going through when it is being broadcast, its a bit technical but hopefully you will understand that it ain’t as easy as if it’s loud here and now it will be loud everywhere.

And let’s take a listen to that great exception, this sound ok in radio too… strange enough.
