I held a mastering workshop for students from Stockholm University of the Arts yesterday. I used to teach audio engineering and music production for 10 years but this was the first time I taught mastering techniques. As usual when you try to teach something you realize that you certainly don’t know it all… well, I already kinda’ knew that but it gets so darn obvious when you try to teach something to someone else. The workshop was much appreciated and I think I got a pass mark anyways but… If you haven’t taught your profession before and get the chance to do so, don’t hesitate, do it. You will end up realizing you need to know more yourself and as a result you will get better on what you’re doing plus you will get better at teaching as well.
In my case I decided that I need to go into depth about Bob Katz K-system, I use it every day but still, I looked like a fool when I got followup questions about the technical differences between the different K standards. My bad, back to the school bench (or rather, back to Bob Katz – Mastering Audio: The Art and the Science).
