After two weeks of moving the speakers and listening position around I think I found the best spot. My conclusion is, as expected, that the room is too small. I would need at least 2 more meters behind my back to be able to hear the really low end. But the good thing is, I got rid of a comb filter issue which made my room response look like the Alps and all the test master I've done after that have translated really well to all sorts of speakers. To handle the problem with the low end I started to develop a plugin that will measure the energy below 100Hz in real time and give me a clue where I am, I will refine the metering over time but I already feel quite confident working with it. I'll probably make it available in one way or another as soon it's 100% done . Here's what it looks like right now (Measuring Missy Elliott – Get Ur Freak On):
It's pretty straight forward, keep all leds at green as much as possible without loosing to much bottom. It should be great for mixing as well and I will give it to customers to try out.
Another really great(and free) tool that you can use if you want to see how your masters comply with different measurement standards is Tosc Analyser; get it here:
