Please read this before submitting files for mixing
To help us get started quickly, it’s important that your project is properly prepared for mixing. While every project is unique, here are a few general guidelines to keep in mind:
-
Render all tracks to the full length of the project, even if a sound only appears briefly — for example a guitar fill that occurs only in the bridge after the second chorus. This ensures everything lines up correctly regardless of which DAW we import the files into.
-
You’re welcome to consolidate takes where appropriate. For example, if your lead vocal is recorded across several tracks (verse vocals on one track, chorus vocals on another, etc.), export them as a single audio file so that the lead vocal exists on one track only. Overdubs, backing vocals, and harmonies should be exported as separate files.
-
Make sure nothing is clipping, meaning no tracks exceed 0 dBFS. A good guideline is to have your master channel averaging around –18 dBFS, or with peaks no higher than –6 dBFS. Alternatively, exporting in 32-bit floating point provides enough headroom to handle most peaks safely.
-
Name files clearly so it’s easy to understand what each file contains — for example Lead Vocal, Rhythm Guitar, Kick, OH, etc. If you submit multiple songs, either include the song title in the file names or package each song in its own ZIP archive to keep them clearly separated.
-
If you’ve premixed using a favourite reverb or other effects, export those effects as separate audio files and make sure the source track (for example the vocal) is completely dry, with no effects applied.
-
Export files at the same sample rate used during recording.
-
Use at least 24-bit resolution when exporting, preferably 32-bit floating point.
-
If you’ve used a click track or an electronic foundation, please let us know the BPM used — ideally included directly in the file name.
